All you need to know about auditions!

Hear Is, Hear Them is a brand new choral ensemble in Cincinnati dedicated to performing, engaging with and inspiring all identities of artistry. Our ensemble is open to all singers of different backgrounds. If that sounds like something you’re interested in, please come by for an audition! They take place Friday, September 10 from 6-9pm and Saturday, September 11 from 10-12pm at Church of Our Saviour on 65 E Hollister St.

What will auditions look like? They will consist of three parts:

  • Tonal Memory: You will be asked to repeat a short series of notes played for you on the piano

  • Sight-singing: You will be asked to read a short snippet of sheet music. You should choose one voice part to sing (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass), and can sing on a neutral syllable ("la", "da", "oo", etc.), solfege, numbers, or text. If desired, our collaborative pianist will accompany you with the other harmonies while they demonstrate as a way to give added support. See an example here.

  • Solo: Sing a song of your choosing that displays your beautiful voice!

If that sounds like a lot please don’t worry! It’ll be a causal environment, just you (or bring a friend to cheer you on), our artistic Director and conductor, Harry, and our accompanist, Bobby. Harry is not looking for perfection on any component of the audition.
If you are particularly nervous about the solo here’s the thing — it is not about what you sing, but how you sing it. You are welcome to bring sheet music for accompaniment, or you can sing a cappella (without the piano playing with you). Memorization is not required. Sing any song that a) shows up your voice and b) you feel confident singing. Stumped for a piece? Something like “Happy Birthday,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” or “The Star-Spangled Banner” will work.

If you are still wondering if you should audition, the short answer is yes! We are interested in hearing from everyone regardless of age or experience. If you find nerves are getting in the way, it is always okay to let Harry know. Also, one of the best things you can give yourself is time! In between each component of the audition, feel free to take a sip of water and some deep breaths. You got this!
